The Cottonwood Tree
I have a love for trees. I think it become a love affair when I was a child growing up in the city of East Chicago, Indiana on the Harbor side. I lived behind my father's shoe repair shop in a small four room plus bath apartment. Our neighbors lived in the upstairs apartment over our shop and apartment. The backdoor of our apartment opened into a back hallwayand the neighbors' backdoor also opened into the same hallway. They had to come down the steps to exit the building from the main floor's back door. We shared the same exit door from the apartment building. Outside our building's back door about five feet away a young cottonwood tree grew. I am sure no one planted it. A seed must have settled there and grew.. Next to our apartment building (sometimes called "a flat" because this two story building had a flat roof)were two vacant lots..The cottonwood tree grew in the vacant lot right next to us but not on our property. The tree was close enough to shade our backdoor. As a child I played under the tree in the summer, swang with my arms on the lower branch and climbed the tree as high as I could. It was the only tree on three large lots, our lot and the 2 vacant lots. In the spring the tree shed its seeds in what appeared to be cotton that drifted to the ground. The tree sprouted with green leafs in the spring and summer which turned yellow in the fall and dropped to the ground before winter. When I was older the vacant lot next to us was sold. The owner did a terrible thing he had the cottonwood tree cut down. I was one sad girl who cried when I heard the bad news. My mother was sad too. This tree and I had grown tall together and shared happy lives. This was the beginning of the love that I have for trees.

RONNA AND DENNIS
Last week-end daughter, Ronna, and her husband, Dennis came from California to visit us in Arizona.
We always look forward to visits from our family members. Papa wanted to cook some barbecued pork ribs, so I invited friends and family to come and visit with Ronna and Dennis and eat ribs. Ronna's cousin, Kent Criswell and his wife Nancy came on Friday night. It had been many years since they had seen each other. Pat and Merrilee also came over Friday night also had a good visit. The rib meal was planned for Saturday so they missed Papa's delicious ribs. Friday we had sauerkraut, cheese and crackers. On Saturday, Uncle Jack came from Tucson, long time friend Sandy Wilmot came along with Jennifer, Dan, Jackson, Morgan, baby Taylor, Robyn, Cole, Victoria, Alisha, Jacob, Noah and Vallerie. So there was a lot of visiting going on and rib eating that night. Ronna has a hobby (which she calls Therapy). She is into beading and makes beautiful jewerly--necklaces, braclets and earrings. She brought some of her work to show us. Merrilee, Sandy and I bought necklaces. Ronna was pleased because she did not expect to sell any. She wanted our opinions and suggestions concerning her designs.

REFLECTIONS OF CHRIST
Gramps and I went to the Mesa Temple's Visiting Center yesterday to view a new exhibit. The exhibit proclaims the divinity of Jesus Christ using inspiring fine art photographs representing people and events in the life of the Savior taken at sites similar to those in the Holy Land. Accompanying the photos is a moving behind-the-scenes 30-minute documentary and sacred music recorded by local artists. Professional photopher Mark Mabry was called to shoot photographs of Easter pageant actors and actresses in costume and in a way that would communicate emotion. The photos were all taken in Arizona except this one which was taken in Rocky Point, Mexico. Seeking spiritual direction in every decision, Brother Mabry , 30, said he never began shooting a scene without first inviting the Spirit through prayer, scripture study and discussing the principles taught from the event in Christ's life. "We thought that if this affects just one life, then it is worth it." he said. "But we realize that it already has--it has literally changed the lives of every one of us involved". I found the pictures to be beautiful and the the way they were created very interesting. Those of you that live close enough to the Mesa Temple should go to see this exhibit. It is very impressive.
